How I Wanted Your Pearls 6/24/2023 WRITTEN DIRECTLY TO THE PAGE
to be
left wide open
with no road map to find
my way around
my parents shirked their purpose
didn't let me know
if I skinned my heart
I could still pick myself up
off the ground
I never knew
who carved words carved
into my forehead
nor stitched the sign upon my back
its a hard thing
to feel neglected
my Mother let me know often
how I lacked
I wasn't worth the time it took
to bring me into the world
there days I didn't stack up
to her yard stick
but I could be her part-time friend
when she wanted to feel better
I'd coo on about how she was
a good Momma
and how she had no reason to
feel mean
I once carried to her bedside
wiped away her guilty tears
lied because it was was better to be
merciful
than to scalp her living soul
Mother
do you rest well
Mother
you left me with our wounds
unhealed
still I wish you your wings
I give you my loyalty
me, the undeserving kind
how I wanted your pearls
